Well done Mithat

Mithat and his sister recently participated in the International Greenwich Olympiad achieving a bronze award certificate and medal. His project included environmental science where he made a fridge that makes hot water to save and reuse the energy released by it. An engineer in the making!

Barry McNee

It is with great sadness that we learnt about the passing of our former Chair of Governors, Barry McNee, this week. Barry’s own children attended St Paul’s, and he dedicated many years to the school. He was particularly involved in the expansion of the school,  e.g. overseeing the millennium building project known as 'Promises for Premises', which saw the building of the current Year 5 and 6 block and, throughout his time as a governor, he was committed to the continued development and upkeep of the school buildings.

We send our thoughts and prayers to Barry’s wife and family.

End of term events

The end of term is always a busy time, please keep an eye on the school website for key dates over the next couple of weeks.

Collective Worship

This half term, the clergy are highlighting a variety of people who lived out the schools’ theologically rooted Christian vision to, ‘…shine like stars to make the world a better place.’ The people being discussing include Corrie ten Boom, Cicely Saunders, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Charles Correa and Harold Moody. These inspirational figures have been chosen to encourage the children to realise that they too have powerful voices and can be the change be agents of change in the World.

We have also been using a new resource called Picture News which looks at current news stories linking them to Christian and British values. This has been really popular with Teachers and children leading to lots of great discussions. We encourage you to discuss the themes we explore further with your child at home.

For other daily acts of worship, we follow the London Diocesan Board of Schools cycle. Here are some suggested questions and prayers we will be exploring which you may wish to use with your children at home.

This week

Themes:

  • God is always there.
  • God is faithful and compassionate.
  • Helping those in need

Questions:
What challenges have you experienced?

What difference would it make to your life to know God is faithful and cares about you?

Challenge:
Donate something to a charity shop.

Prayer:
Lord God thank you that you always care about me and can always be trusted. Help me to remember the times when you have helped me. Amen

Next week

Themes:

  • Challenge in bringing God’s word to reluctant hearers
  • Perseverance, listening

Questions:

Have you ever felt like no one was listening to you? What happened?

How can you be a good listener? What do you need to do?

Has anyone ever talked to you about God? Did you want to listen? Why/why not?

Challenge:

Think about someone who is a good listener. How do they show they are listening to you? Try to do the same things when listening to someone else.

Prayer:

Father God, help me to be wise in who I listen to and help me to listen well to good advice. Amen

Year 1 - visit to the seaside

On Tuesday, Year 1 travelled to Walton-on-the-Naze as part of their Geography unit ‘Coasts’. Even though we got a little wet, the children and adults had such a wonderful time! We enjoyed making sandcastles and dipping our toes in the sea. Well done Year 1; you were amazing!

Year 3 - Sports news ....

Year 3 have had a busy couple of weeks.

Firstly, Finn, Summer, Amelia and Max represented the school at the borough athletics and all did fantastically well.

Next, some children went to Raglan to take part in a tag rugby tournament. They did so well - many playing for the first time ever. We won some matches and scored lots of tries.

Finally children have been getting into the Euros spirit by writing match reports for England’s dramatic win over Slovakia. Hopefully they will get chance to write another one on Monday!

Year 5 - Poetry

Year 5 have been studying the poem ‘The Highwayman’ by Alfred Noyes. The children have been building up to writing a monologue in the character of ‘Tim the Ostler’. Have a look at the photos of us hot seating in character, interviewing ‘Tim the Ostler’ and some of the monologues we have written.

“She was my one true love and now she is gone. It is all my fault, after all it was my idea and it backfired on me. Why would I do this? I’m now stuck in a deserted nightmare. At least the Highwayman is gone, I mean if I hadn’t called King Georges men than he would still be alive and would have Bess to himself.” Alex V 5H

“You must think I have been driven mad! Believe me, I’ve been asking myself this ever since I first saw the enticing glimpse of my beloved Bess. I’ve been sitting in sorrow, wallowing in the moons pathetic attempt at flooding the small town with light”. Cora 5HP

“Tim you annoying little brute! Why did you do it? You fool! I should be ashamed of myself. I should have just kept quiet and told Bess about my feelings for her. That unruly vagabond stole the love of my life and I am in despair.” Olivia 5H
