Black History Month

Last week, as part of Black History Month, we took part in a live assembly with thousands of other schools up and down the country. The theme of this year's BHM is 'Reclaiming Narratives' and the assembly, and the other focus work during October, sees our children look at the lives of marginalised and overlooked Black individuals and culture.

The Year 2 children have been actively celebrating Black History Month through focused research on significant Black figures, engaging with stories, and guided reading on the event's origins. This week in History, they learned about Rosa Parks and re-enacted her famous bus protest, helping them understand her role in challenging segregation laws and advancing equality.

Collective Worship

This half term, we are following the London Diocesan Board of Schools cycle of Collective worship based around themes from the Bible readings in Church each week. Here are some suggested questions and prayers which you may wish to use with your children at home.

This week

Themes drawn from Hebrews 5:1-10 and Mark 10:35-45

  • Servant leaders

Questions:

When was the last time you asked for something important?
Do you think it is ok to ask God for things? Do you think he answers?
How could you put someone before yourself this week?
Who are the people who give their time to you or help you? How could you thank them?

Challenge:

Put someone before yourself this week.

Prayer:

Loving Father God, thank you for those people who serve us in many ways. Thank you especially for _____________. Help me to serve others too. Amen

Collective Worship Committee News

Over the past two weeks, the collective worship committee have been busy helping with acts of worship both in school and at the Year 5 and 6 Eucharist service at St Paul’s Church.

Peter, Katie, Lottie and Violet also led the whole school Collective Worship last Friday. It was based around an old Jewish folktale which explored fairness in terms of justice rather than just getting your own way. The two brothers in the story did not use the phrase, ‘It’s not fair!’ in a selfish way. Instead, they used it in a positive way as they tried to do something to make the situation fairer or more just. The children prompted the school community to reflect on what they could do to make the world a fairer place. Well done!

Year 5 - London Zoo

On Wednesday, Year 5 travelled to London Zoo on the train as part of our Geography and English curriculum. After a lovely walk through Regents Park, the children were ready to see some animals. We visited the Rainforest and Nightlife, and we were all amazed at the sleepy sloths napping in the trees above us whilst the flying fox hung in the canopy. We continued our walk around the zoo, visiting the giraffes, zebras, reptiles, amphibians, tigers, monkeys and more. We were extremely lucky to see the new baby cubs feeding from their mother and then seeing the baby gorillas too! Before having lunch with the penguins, the children visited the gift shop and bought souvenirs to remember their day at the zoo. We had wonderful weather and well-behaved children on our first outing in Year 5; well done, children, we are very proud of you.
